Traditional arts group to get funding boost

SINGAPORE: Traditional arts groups are getting a boost in funding starting next month, thanks to three new initiatives from the National Arts Council (NAC). Traditional arts covers a spectrum of Chinese, Malay and Indian performing art forms, including dance, music, calligraphy and poetry. The money comes from a S$23 million fund that the NAC plans to use over five years. For the coming financial year, they expect to spend S$3.2 million, up from about S$1.8 million in the last. Artists and arts groups can now apply for a larger amount of funding of up to 50 per cent, up from 30 per cent previously. The money can be used to pay for direct costs of producing and staging a traditional arts performance or mounting an arts exhibition. For example, it would enable a Chinese opera group to flash surtitles during the performance to cater to a wider audience. The NAC is also hoping...
