Radiation concerns spark a frenzy for baby formula in Hong Kong

HONG KONG: Uncertainty over supplies from Japan has sparked a mad rush in Hong Kong to buy Japanese products, particularly baby formula, for fear that new batches may be affected by radiation. Police had to control crowds of people who queued for hours outside chain stores. Japan is a major food supplier to Hong Kong, and many Hong Kong mothers have long been feeding their babies Japanese milk formula as it is seen as safer and of better quality. Concerns that supply of the product could be cut off to the city prompted worried parents to queue for hours outside stores. Police were even brought to control crowds outside chain stores. To add to the demand, since the melamine milk scandal, many people from mainland China also frequently cross over the border to buy products in Hong Kong.
