KUALA LUMPUR - SOME 18,000 cases of tuberculosis (TB) were detected in the country last year, a rise of 12.5 per cent from the 16,000 cases in 2008. Institute of Respiratory Medicine director Datuk Dr Abdul Razak Muttalif said 1,600 deaths were reported from the disease last year. Ignorance about TB resulted in those infected seeking treatment late and thus contributing to the increasing rate of the disease, he added. 'When they come in late for treatment, they would have already spread it to 10 or 20 other people,' he said. Dr Abdul Razak said tuberculosis was not under control yet and 80 per cent of those infected with TB in the country were locals. 'A lot still needs to be done to educate Malaysians about the disease,' he told a press conference on Wednesday. 'There is a cure for TB.
