Philippines' disaster preparedness under review

MANILA : As part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is one of the most seismically active countries in the region. Recent events in Japan have put the country's preparedness for such calamities in focus. In a village located south of the capital Manila, residents continue to live along one of the most active fault lines in the country, the West Valley fault line. Though their houses have sustained cracks and continue to sink, they are not evacuating to safer grounds. Eduardo Bombasi said: "We are afraid of an earthquake. But we do not have a place to transfer to. Authorities visited us before and we asked where they plan to relocate us, but they did not offer us anything. If we leave, we do not know where to go.
