Attention turned to a small group of workers who may be the last line of defence against a nuclear catastrophe. New York Times highlighted a nameless group of 50 technicians and crew who were either volunteers, or volunteered, to stay on in the quake-crippled Fukushima nuclear plant to pump seawater on exposed nuclear fuel that could be emitting dangerous levels of radiation or put out fires as they occur. The danger they are being exposed to is increasing. Officials say reactors no. 1, 2 and 3 are down, while Reuters reported a new blaze at the building housing reactor no. 4 on Tuesday. Experts say spent fuel rods in a cooling pool at the reactor could be exposed by the fire and spew more radiation into the atmosphere.
