Southern Thailand violence kills 4 (Straits Times)

BANGKOK - FOUR people were killed on Friday in separate incidents in the restive Thai south, according to police in the region, where violence in a seven-year insurgency appears to have escalated in recent weeks. One soldier and two male villagers - aged 34 and 56 - were shot dead in ambushes by militants in Pattani province, while an insurgent wanted by police was shot and killed by authorities in Yala province. Shadowy Islamic militants have waged an uprising in Thailand's southernmost region bordering Malaysia since early 2004, leaving more than 4,400 people dead, including both Muslims and Buddhists. Last week the government said violence was escalating in the troubled region, following a string of gun and bomb attacks. -- AFP
