National Youth Council to invest in mentoring
The National Youth Council (NYC) will invest S$500,000 to support a mentoring programme for youth - the most it has invested in a mentoring project so far. The announcement was made on Friday at the National Youth Mentoring Conference 2011. The school-based pilot mentoring project will start this month as an initiative under the National Youth Mentoring Plan. It will allow appointed mentoring organisations, such as Mendaki and Republic Polytechnic, to offer their programmes to secondary schools. It will also cater to parents who want to source for mentoring programmes directly. NYC said a school-based test bed mentoring project of 39 mentors and 79 mentees - which was conducted over a year - showed that the mentees improved in their attitudes and school participation level. They also demonstrated better confidence and time-management skills.
