Shaline Tan, 31, first-ever woman to get SAF's Golden Bayonet award

SINGAPORE - Joining the army was a lifelong childhood dream but it took Miss Shaline Tan, 31, almost 13 years - spent working in pest control, food and beverage outlets and a creative agency - before she got her parents' blessings to realise her calling. On Friday, Miss Tan was one of 17 specialist cadets - and the only female among them - who received the Golden Bayonet, an honour given to the best cadets, at a graduation parade at Pasir Laba Camp. As a child, Ms Tan would devour books on the special armed forces and the marines and, later, badger her male friends about their experiences during National Service. "I was always interested in the military. It's something that has always been on my mind," she said.
