PM Lee: We stand in solidarity, support with Japan

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today visited the Japanese Embassy in Singapore and penned his condolence message for the victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the death toll for which has eclipsed that of the 1995 Kobe temblor. “Deepest condolences to the Government and people of Japan, and especially the victims and their families, from the Government and people of Singapore," wrote Mr Lee. "We stand in solidarity and support with you. May you recover and rebuild your homes, lives, and country." Police yesterday confirmed 6,911 people died when last week's earthquake sent a surge of water inland, smashing ships, cars and buildings and razing entire towns to the ground. There were 10,692 registered as missing, 2,611 injured, while almost 400,000 people were forced from their homes. This story is only available online.
