Lack of food, water and medicine as infectious diseases start to spread in Japan's affected regions

TOKYO - The lack of sufficient food, water, medicine and heating supplies is taking its toll on survivors of last week's quake and tsunami, who face the spread of influenza and other infectious diseases in their temporary shelters. Conditions appear to be worsening in the north-east Tohoku region, with reports of deaths caused by quake-induced shock and the stress of day-to-day life. At least 27 former hospital patients and elderly people had died as of Thursday morning as they were evacuated or while staying at a hospital or shelters in Fukushima, Miyagi and Iwate prefectures, The Asahi Shimbun has found. Outside of Kasshi Primary School in Kamaishi, Iwate prefecture, where about 300 people have taken shelter, there are notices warning that people inside have contracted infectious diseases such as the flu or gastroenteritis.
