RIO DE JANEIRO: US President Barack Obama visited a notorious favela in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday as he visited emerging economic powerhouse Brazil on the first stop on a three-nation Latin America tour. Brazil, host of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, has made an amazing economic leap in recent years, lifting millions of its people from poverty and capturing a new global influence. This progress was on display on Obama's visit to the "City of God," a slum or favela that used to be so notorious that it was made the subject of an internationally acclaimed 2002 movie. Violence has since dropped considerably, and the favela has cleaned up its act enough to host a US president.
