NEA promises action against smokers in parks.

WE THANK Mr Yeo Zheng Hang for his feedback ("Enforce no-smoking rules in parks"; last Tuesday). We agree that people should not smoke in playgrounds or exercise areas in parks, as it is prohibited by law. The National Parks Board (NParks) follows the National Environment Agency's (NEA) regulations on prohibiting smoking in outdoor playgrounds and exercise areas as they are frequented by children and members of the public. "No smoking" signs have been placed in these areas. We urge park users to be considerate and to refrain from smoking at these areas. Acting on the feedback, officers from NEA carried out inspections at the neighbourhood park in Jurong West Street 62 last Wednesday. During the inspections, the officers did not observe anyone flouting the no-smoking rule. NEA will continue with checks at the park and will step up enforcement if required. Derek Ho Director ...
