SINGAPORE: Mobile penetration in many parts of Southeast Asia is close to 80 per cent to 90 per cent, but the outlook for most telcos is weak, with very little room for them to grow. So the advent of the cheap smartphone, at under US$100, could be just what the industry needs. The cheap smartphone is now a reality. By the end of 2012, five hundred million people are expected to own one - and most will be teenagers. These cheap smartphones are a smart move by both manufacturers and telcos to create new markets. Duncan Stewart, director of the Deloitte Research, said: "Not everybody in the world can afford US$500, US$800, US$900 for a smartphone. Looking at teenagers may be getting their first phone, older people who have been be reluctant to shelf out all their money for an high end phone.
