High-end supermarkets cash in on China market

SHANGHAI: Better living standards and increased health consciousness have wealthy Shanghai consumers gaining interest in imported and organic products; and high-end supermarkets are grabbing the opportunity to get in on the China market. Noticing a niche in the industry, Hong Kong's ParknShop's "Taste" Brand opened its first store in Shanghai earlier this year, where more than 50% of its products sold are imported from over 40 countries. "Our target audience are mainly white-collars, individuals who are pursuing excellent life quality, who pay attention to their health and want diversity of choices. Plus foreigners who are looking for special products imported from their homeland," said Ms Suzanne Liao, manager for China's ParknShop.
