After Brazil, Obama heads to Chile to promote growth

SANTIAGO: US President Barack Obama arrived in Chile on Monday aiming to promote democracy and economic growth, even as the United States faces rising criticism over its military intervention in Libya. More than 2,000 police have been deployed to protect Obama who arrived from a two-day visit in Brazil where he held up the country as a shining example for the pro-democracy movement sweeping the Middle East. In an interview with the newspaper El Mercurio, Obama signalled the United States intends to seek more equitable relations with a region where US influence has receded in recent years.
