Electronics supply chains may clog because of Japan disasters

SINGAPORE: Electronic manufacturers may see their supply chains clogged later this year because of the recent disasters in Japan; which has already caused production in some factories to be disrupted. Electronics companies are worried, particularly about semiconductor supplies. Analysts say that Apple could face hurdles in keeping up with demand for the recently rolled-out iPad 2; with at least five major components used in the tablet, including the battery parts, being sourced from Japan. According to J.P. Morgan, high-capacity electronic products such as smartphones that require rechargeable polymer batteries, will be the worst hit from production delays. According to market research firm IHS iSuppli, the Japanese earthquake has resulted in the suspension of one-quarter of the global production of silicon wafers used to make semiconductors.
