Tokyo deals with power shortages: By Michiyo Ishida | Posted: 24 March 2011 2120 hrs TOKYO: Despite being some 3...

TOKYO: Despite being some 300 km away from the worst-hit areas in Japan, the recent disasters have dealt Tokyo with problems such as radiation concerns and frequent power shortages. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) introduced rolling blackouts, three days after a massive earthquake and tsunami struck northeast Japan. The damaged Fukushima Nuclear Facility was unable to generate enough power for Tokyo and its surrounding prefectures. On average, TEPCO used to supply 51 million kilowatts. Its capacity has dropped to 35 million kilowatts. Some parts of Tokyo experience power outages almost every day except on weekends, especially in Tokyo suburbs like Chofu City. The power outages are creating problems for residents staying there, affecting daily activities like cooking and driving - due to traffic lights occasionally ceasing function.
