An Olympic-sized gesture

SINGAPORE - Legendary weightlifter Tan Howe Liang and some 166 athletes who have represented the Republic at the Summer Olympics from 1936 to 2008 will be honoured at a formal dinner on May 16 at Orchard Hotel. Jointly organised by Olympians Singapore and the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), the commemorative dinner has received a generous helping hand from the Breast Cancer Foundation. An unnamed benefactor had donated 382 Royal Copenhagen Olympic collectors' plates from the 1972 Munich Games to the Foundation, who in turn offered them to the SNOC and Olympians Singapore. Event organisers plan to sell the plates at S$200 each in the hope of raising about S$80,000, with half the proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
