Radioactive traces found over north-eastern China

BEIJING - China has found traces of radioactive iodine-131 in the atmosphere above north-eastern Heilongjiang province as the authorities monitored food and water for contamination from the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan. The low levels of radioactive particles found in Heilongjiang were one-100,000th the normal level of exposure people get from natural sources and will not jeopardise health or contaminate food and water, the Ministry of Health said on Sunday. Iodine-131 does not exist naturally and is among substances leaked from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant on Japan's eastern seaboard, according to the statement.
