BEIJING: More areas of China are seeing "extremely low" levels of radioactivity believed to be from Japan's crippled nuclear power plant, but it poses no public health threat, the Chinese government has said. The Ministry of Environmental Protection had said on Monday that "man-made" radioactive iodine was detected across the country's east and southeast but a new statement said it had spread to other regions in the north and south. The areas newly affected include the capital Beijing, and the northern provinces of Hebei, Henan, Shanxi and Shandong, the ministry said in a statement late Tuesday. "The amount of radioactivity is about one one-thousandth the amount a person would receive in taking a 2,000-kilometre (1,200-mile) air flight," the ministry said. "This means that it will have no effect on the environment or on public health and no preventative measures are needed...
