Foreigners can sign up for ICA's faster checkpoint system in Singapore

REGULAR visitors to Singapore who had to juggle between a passport and a smart card for faster clearance at checkpoints can now look forward to an easier, automated self-clearance system. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) announced yesterday that foreigners who travel in and out of Singapore regularly can start registering to use the new enhanced system from next Tuesday. They need only one form of identification - their passports, which can now be scanned - in addition to their thumbprint at the checkpoints. ICA added that it will stop issuing the personalised access smart cards, which cost $30 and contain details such as the holder's photograph, as most travellers are now eligible to use the new system.
