China revises up forex reserves

SHANGHAI - CHINA on Friday revised up its world-beating foreign exchange reserves for 2010, but insisted trade would be more balanced in 2011 amid mounting calls for a more flexible exchange rate regime. The nation's foreign exchange reserves expanded US$469.6 billion (S$592 billion) last year, higher than the US$448.2 billion reported in January, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) said in an annual report. The revision brought China's total forex reserves at the end of 2010 - already the world's largest - to a record high of US$2.869 trillion, compared with previous estimates of US$2.847 trillion. The increase highlights imbalances in global trade and the challenge Beijing faces in stemming a flood of liquidity into the country that has been fuelling inflation and driving property prices up.
