Pre-quake survey shows improvement in Japan business sentiment

TOKYO: Business sentiment in Japan improved in March. That is according to the latest quarterly survey or tankan by the Bank of Japan. The headline index came in higher by one point from the previous survey three months ago. The latest tankan shows, sentiment among the large manufacturers improved from plus five to plus six. It is the first improvement in two quarters and better than expected. Confidence was especially strong among exporters such as production lines, and carmakers. Confidence among the big non-manufacturer also improved, up by two points. The survey also shows that small manufacturers and non manufacturers were more positive as well. While the findings provide more evidence of a recovering economy, it was before the massive earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear power plant crisis hit.
