Radiation fears in Tokyo 'may be overblown'

TOKYO - Typical amounts of radiation in Hong Kong exceed those in Tokyo even amid the crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, say experts, indicating that concerns about spreading contamination may be overblown. Japan's nuclear safety agency also cast doubt on the Tokyo Electric Power's (TEPCO) recent radiation figures in the areas around the plant, saying they seemed suspiciously high. The radiation level in central Tokyo reached a high of 0.109 microsieverts per hour in Shinjuku Ward on Thursday, data from the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health show. That compares with 0.14 microsieverts in the Kowloon district of Hong Kong, according to the Hong Kong Observatory. A person is exposed to 50 microsieverts from a typical X-ray.
