Commentary: For expats who fled Tokyo, a loss of respect

After triple disasters hit Japan on March 11, for the Tokyo region's 30 million inhabitants there was surprisingly little disruption. I had business meetings about long-term projects with Japanese clients a day or two after the big quake, even while strong afterquakes continued. Japanese people not directly in the earthquake disaster zone carry on with normal work almost without interruption. Rebuilding is in full swing: The super-express train across the disaster area is scheduled to operate again from April along the fully repaired line. Of the 14,200 mobile phone base stations put out of action by the disaster, 90 per cent are back in service. More than 100,000 Japanese soldiers and about as many US soldiers with the gigantic "Operation Tomodachi" are involved in the rebuilding work.
