Tripoli stance will prolong conflict, say rebels

BENGHAZI, Libya: Tripoli's rejection of a rebel ceasefire offer suggests the conflict raging in Libya could drag out for some time, the opposition said Saturday. It was "testimony" that Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi "wants no peace -- he wants to inflict as much damage on the Libyan people as possible before leaving power," a rebel spokesman, Mustafa Gheriani, told reporters in the insurgents' eastern stronghold of Benghazi. "NATO, which is representing the United Nations in its application of Security Council resolutions protecting civilians, got the message," he affirmed. The rebel ceasefire proposed Friday -- conditional on forces loyal to Gaddafi withdrawing from besieged cities and allowing anti-regime protests to take place -- was knocked back by Gaddafi's government as a "trick."
