MJ in hospital, kidney stones and hissy fits - the many travails of a concert organiser in Singapore

Last month, members of the Esplanade staff were anxiously awaiting the arrival of Charlie Haden. The 73-year-old bass player's work with jazz greats like Ornette Coleman and Keith Jarrett, as well as his other feted collaborations, has made Haden one of the most significant jazz players today. Haden was to be the artist-in-residence for this year's Mosaic Music Festival - but The Esplanade received grim news before he arrived: He'd been holidaying in Bali and developed a severe pain in the torso, said his wife and manager, Ruth Cameron. Was there, she asked, a urologist they could recommend? "Once he arrived, we sent him straight to the Raffles Hospital for his check-up and he was admitted immediately," said Amy Ho, producer, The Esplanade Co Ltd.
