Japan says it has no choice but to release 11,500 tonnes of radioactive wwater into the Pacific Ocean

TOKYO - Japanese engineers yesterday began releasing 11,500 tonnes of water contaminated with low levels of radiation from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean, as they struggled to contain increasing amounts of dangerous runoff resulting from efforts to cool damaged reactors. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the government decided to allow the plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), to take the step as "an unavoidable emergency measure". The water that will be released contains about 100 times the legal limits of radiation, TEPCO said. About 10,000 tonnes of water will be released over two days from a storage site to make room for water with more dangerous levels of radiation. An additional 1,500 tonnes will also be released over five days from the No 5 and No 6 reactors, after runoff was found flooding parts of their turbine b...
