'Remorseful' recruit owns up to commander

SINGAPORE - The Singapore Armed Forces(SAF) serviceman who was photographed with his maid carrying his field pack has owned up to his commander. The photograph was widely circulated in recent weeks on the Internet and had sparked a controversy. Apart from making the news here, the episode was also reported by wires agencies and Taiwan’s Taipei Times. In a statement issued to the media, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said the man was a recruit undergoing the Physical Training Preparatory phase prior to the Basic Military Training phase. Said Mindef director of public affairs, Colonel Desmond Tan: “The recruit is remorseful for his actions and realises that it was wrong for him to have allowed this. He has been counselled and continues his training. The SAF has reminded all servicemen to be mindful of their conduct in public.” Yesterday, new People’s Action Party candidate...
