Businesses pick up in disaster-hit Fukushima

AIZU WAKAMATSU, Fukushima Prefecture: Unfounded fears over radiation contamination has badly affected the whole of Japan's northern Tohoku region. Fukushima's economy was especially hurt by the nuclear crisis, caused by last year's earthquake and tsunami. The prefecture, Japan's third largest, is now safe, and areas with high radiation remain strictly off-limits. Channel NewsAsia made a trip to west Fukushima to check the radiation levels. Radiation checks showed 0.07 micro Sievert per hour in one area and 0.08 micro Sievert per hour in another. These are levels that are comparable to major cities like Singapore and New York. The measurement is even lower than in Seoul. This is the radiation level in Aizu Wakamatsu. Its about 100 kilometres away from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
