@Syed Alwi: You have raised a valid observation about the ‘nature of Islam’ in Malaysia, but I do not share the kind of pessimism you hold in suggesting that Islam in Malaysia is of singular, monolithic character. Of course in their struggle for legitimacy in the eyes of the rakyat, UMNO and PAS, in Farish Noor’s succinct terms, ended up trying to ‘out-Islamise’ each other. But people like Yasmin were arguing for a much more pluralistic and progressive form of Islam–and she was not alone. And contrary to what you’ve mentioned, while I do think Yasmin Ahmad was an idealist, her films were not simplistic. I’m not sure what you mean by saying that ‘No one dares to address the Islamic issue in Malaysia.
