SEOUL: North Korea's parliament is scheduled to meet Thursday amid speculation it will promote the youngest son of ailing leader Kim Jong-Il to further bolster his status as leader-in-waiting. The session of the Supreme People's Assembly, which rubber-stamps decisions taken by Kim's regime, will be the first since the North's deadly shelling of a South Korean island last November. The 69-year-old Kim last autumn appointed his son Jong-Un a four-star general and gave his powerful ruling party posts, as part of a drive to groom him as eventual successor. Analysts say legislators meeting Thursday may well appoint the son as a vice-chairman of the National Defence Commission (NDC), the country's most powerful institution which is chaired by his father.
