Softball coach Goh Yong Hang believes in a hardline approach as far as his students are concerned. To him, the development of a student’s character is key, as his approach towards them is “character before results”. Thus, the River Valley High School teacher-coach has no qualms about benching students who have problems with discipline or schoolwork, even though they might be his stronger players. He once benched six of his best players as they have discipline problems, and even stripped a girl of her captaincy because she had a quarrel with her Chinese teacher. Goh said: “A captain must be an example to the rest of her teammates and have good behaviour, I couldn’t condone such behaviour.” He's hard, but fair. And Goh's no-nonsense style earns him the utmost repect from his young charges. More in The New Paper on Thursday (May 10).
