Business as usual for Japanese shops here

SINGAPORE - Despite concerns about radiation-contaminated food from Japan in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit the country last month, it seems to be business as usual for shops like Japanese supermarket Meidi-Ya. According to at least one mall - Liang Court, which houses 17 Japanese retail outlets including Meidi-Ya - business for its Japanese tenants has not been adversely affected. Japanese housewife Sakai Sachiko, who was shopping there, said she and her Japanese friends were not afraid to buy things from Japan as "we trust the Singapore government", given the stringent checks carried out by the authorities on food imported from Japan. Investment company owner Jeremy Yong, a Singaporean, said the screenings gave him confidence that the products on the shelves "are in good shape."
