Rationale behind S'pore's manpower policies

MANPOWER Minister Gan Kim Yong responded on Sunday to calls by opposition parties to change various manpower policies, explaining the rationale behind the People's Action Party's approach to retirement age, income support for low-wage workers, and the Central Provident Fund minimum sum scheme. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a community event in Jurong West, he said the Government's re-employment approach is better than raising the statutory retirement age to 65 - as proposed in the Workers' Party (WP) in its manifesto released on Saturday - as it gives both workers and employers the flexibility to adjust the terms of employment. Some workers may want to reduce their responsibilities to spend more time with their families, others may want to switch jobs, while some companies may want to promote younger employees to leadership positions, he said.
