TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan this morning placed advertisements in newspapers around the world, thanking people worldwide for their financial and emotional support for Japan in the month since the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11, in turn triggering a nuclear disaster at Fukushima. The International Herald Tribune, Wall Street Journal and Financial Times were among the newspapers to carry the advert, which ran under the headline "Thank you for the kizuna - the bonds of friendship". "One month has passed since an earthquake of unprecedented scale struck Japan taking thousands of precious lives. Even today, evacuation shelters are still the only refuge for more than 150,000 people," wrote Mr Kan.
