Malaysia's opposition wins Chinese support prior to upcoming Sarawak elections

KUCHING: Voters in the east Malaysian state of Sarawak go to the polls this Saturday, with the opposition appearing to have won the support of the Chinese - a majority of the electorate. Its capital Kuching, with a high concentration of Chinese voters, has become a battleground for the opposition democratic action party DAP and BN's Sarawak United Peoples Party. DAP has even rolled out its own party mascot - called "ubah", which means change in the national language Bahasa Malaysia - for the 10th Sarawak state election. DAP's campaign for change and reform has struck a chord with many voters in urban areas. DAP is contesting in 15 Chinese majority seats. It is fielding several fresh faces including the youngest candidate 26-year-old Ms Christina Chiew. They have been targeting Sarawak's longest serving chief minister Taib Mahmud, accusing him of abuse of power and squander...
