SINGAPORE - The Singapore Red Cross has collected a total of S$19 million from Singaporeans, so far, to help the homeless in Japan following the tsunami, earthquake and nuclear disaster, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed, said yesterday. This amount excludes an additional contribution of S$500,000 from the Government. The update in Parliament came in response to a query from MP Michael Palmer (Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC) on the amount of aid rendered by Singapore to Japan so far. Besides the cash donations, a team of Singapore Civil Defence Force search-and-rescue specialists and dogs were sent to the affected areas. Relief agencies, like the Singapore Red Cross and Mercy Relief, are also sourcing for items that the Japanese need - blankets, water bottles and containers, and mattresses.
