Non-Constituency MPs are not marginalised: PM Lee #SGelections

PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Tuesday night defended the Non-Constituency MP (NCMP) system, saying that it ensures that there is always an opposition voice in Parliament. Fielding questions during a 'live' forum on Channel News Asia with a panel of 12 Singaporeans from a wide spectrum of society, Mr Lee described it as a 'good system' that allows NCMPs to use their five-year parliamentary stint to establish themselves. To a question from businessman Kurt Wee, who said that the NCMP scheme is not a real democratic system, PM Lee disagreed that these MPs were being 'squeezed or marginalised'. Said PM Lee: 'They have full rights to participate in the debate, all debates. They can argue, they can establish themselves and they belong to political parties. These are not independents.'
