THERE are great slasher flicks, and then there are bad movies where random people are slashed, impaled, disembowelled, crushed, gouged and/or thrown off a building to their bloody deaths. The original Scream belongs in the first category and, to a far lesser extent, so does Scream 2. Scream 3, however, belonged to the second, along with other bargain-bin DVDs like the I Know What You Did Last Summer movies and pretty much every remake of a horror classic. The difference doesn't only lie in the presence of post-modern, self-referential humour, otherwise these films would star Jason Schwartzman. Nor is it solely in the inventiveness and outrageous gore of the kill. Nope, the key to a great slasher flick is the hunt. Even in horror films, the audience needs to be able to either root for a plucky character's survival or gleefully cheer the inevitable death of someone annoying ...
