I refer to the letter by Mr Lim Pi Chu, "Stop sale of phone numbers to marketeers" (April 7). The Government recognises the increasing importance and impact of data protection on consumers, and will be introducing a general data protection law in Singapore. To be tabled for consideration by Parliament next year, the proposed law aims to protect consumers' personal data against misuse by regulating how businesses collect, use, disclose and retain consumer personal data; as well as include requirements such as obtaining the consent of individuals to use their personal information. In the meantime, consumers are advised to exercise caution when giving out their personal data. Marketing companies and database providers may have obtained consumers' personal data from a variety of sources, including lucky draw entries and surveys.
