MISS LILA TIU: 'Granted, Indians from India may have an accent, but who doesn't ('Teachers from India' by Mr Nicholas Loh; last Saturday)? Singaporeans have accents too; just listen to your neighbours and you can tell their racial origins from their voice inflections and choice of words. So whom are we to judge whether these Indian imports are any less capable than locals in educating our young? How well a teacher teaches should not be determined by his accent. Similarly, a student's ability to master English is not based on the premise of a good British accent. If that were so, we would need to recall a majority of the English language teachers and retrain them. Let's face it, our local accent works only in this part of the world. If a child ever has an Indian expatriate teaching his class, take the opportunity to educate the child on the beauty of diversity; at least, he...
