Singapore's thirst for power hit record last year

SINGAPORE - The Republic's electricity demand hit a record high last year, growing by 9 per cent from the previous year, powered by a strong economic rebound, the Energy Market Company (EMC) said. The demand, however, softened in the first quarter of this year, which is traditionally a low consumption period due to cooler weather and festive holidays, said EMC, which operates the wholesale electricity market, National Electricity Market of Singapore (NEMS) - where power is bought and sold through a competitive trading system. Last year, average annual demand was at 5,008 megawatts (MW), versus 4,603 MW in 2009. Last year also saw the highest average monthly demand, with 5,161 MW recorded in May.
