Hard road ahead for Red Cross personnel in Japan

TOKYO: Eastern Japan's Tohoku region was the hardest hit by the March 11 earthquake. Red Cross officials said they had never seen such devastation before. 73 per cent of the city of Ishinomaki in Iwate Prefecture was flooded by the tsunami and only one hospital survived in this city with a population of 162,000. Hiroyuki Ura, Chief of Disaster Management and Social Welfare Division with the Japanese Red Cross Society, said: "Since the hospital was the only building in Ishinomaki which remained intact, it became an evacuation site, and there were patients and evacuees seeking relief. "The hospital was in a total chaos. Last week, I revisited the site and found the situation at the hospital stabilized. The hospital resumed regular outpatient treatment."
