THIS is shaping up to be a most interesting election. Even before Nomination Day is announced, the flurry of activity on the opposition front suggests it is going to put up the fiercest fight against the People's Action Party since 1991, when a concerted assault saw four seats fall from PAP hands. The opposition did not really make use of the 1991 result to entrench itself in Parliament, losing two of the seats it held in 1996. Since then, only Potong Pasir and Hougang remain in opposition hands. But General Election 2011 looks set to be an iconic GE for the opposition. This GE is interesting for the number of people contesting against the People's Action Party who actually have backgrounds normally associated with PAP candidates.
