Indian ethnic communities celebrate New Year

SINGAPORE: The many ethnic communities of the Indian Sub-continent are celebrating their New Year this week, including the Sikh and Tamil communities. In Singapore, Thursday marks the first day of the year in the Tamil calendar. It is the birth of the first month, Chithirai, of the solar-based calendar. Many Tamils started the celebrations with prayers and offerings at temples - such as the Sri Srinivasa Perumal temple at Serangoon Road. Decked in new clothes, many sought blessings for the new year. The festival is also celebrated by other Hindus around the world.
