AVA has lifted suspension on import of fruits & vegetables from Japan's Ehime Prefecture

SINGAPORE - The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has lifted the suspension on import of fruits and vegetables from Japan's Ehime Prefecture. The suspension was imposed on March 24, after the AVA detected radioactive contaminants from a sample of Perilla leaf that a Japanese exporter had listed as coming from Ehime. After investigations by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the sample was found to be from Fukushima Prefecture and that the exporter had listed the wrong origin. According to the ministry and the Ehime Prefectural Authority, no radioactive contaminants were detected in tests of other Perilla leaf samples from Ehime. The AVA is working with the Japanese authorities on a certificate of origin to accompany products shipped to Singapore to avoid such irregularities in future.
