Nurses strike across Venezuela, disrupt hospitals - Straits Times

CARACAS - NURSES across Venezuela stayed away from work on Thursday to support colleagues on hunger strike over pay in the latest labour protest against President Hugo Chavez's socialist government. Unions said thousands of nurses in about half of Venezuela's 24 states joined the six-hour stoppage, disrupting hospitals and highlighting various pockets of labour discontent around the South American Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) member of 27 million people. In an embarrassment to a government proud of its policies on social services and workers' rights, about a dozen nurses have been on hunger strike in Caracas for 25 days. 'If they thought they would defeat us, they were wrong. The only way they will remove us from here is dead,' Mr Quintin Gonzales, a 38-year-old nurse, told Reuters from the protest site outside the Brazilian embassy in Caracas. ...
