Support & funds continue to pour in for disaster-hit Japan

SINGAPORE: It has been more than a month since a massive earthquake and tsunami struck Japan. In Singapore, the local and expatriate communities have come together to raise funds for the stricken areas. They include the former president of Singapore's Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) Hj Maarof Hj Salleh, an Iraqi expatriate and bar owner Laith Al Hemairy as well as some 200 bike afficionados. Together they launched the "SMS-75772 In Unity For Japan" service. Each SMS sent costs S$50, and all proceeds will be channelled to Japan through the Singapore Red Cross Society. Mr Laith Al Hemairy, co-owner of Kazbar, said: "We were searching for different initiatives and came across this one.
