Sushi and technology - my first column for Today briefly describing how a small biz can get started with tech.

Most of us do not get a say on the technology in the workplace. You sit at your desk, the IT guy comes and dictates this e-mail client, that office suite, and a three-year-old operating system. "Sure, whatever gets the job done", you shrug. You do not care how much it costs; you just know everyone else in the office is using it. Then you start your own small business and realise the e-mail system you are used to costs thousands of dollars, those "free" phone calls at work are charged by the minute and, instead of the invisible boss paying the bills, it is you. Thankfully, you can leverage on big companies as they race to move people into "the cloud" (applications running on the Internet). With the right resources, you can put together an infrastructure rivalling the SingTels of the world. The most important thing you need is a domain name, which you can register for US$9.9...
